Fire destroys Lakeland City Hall during construction

An overnight fire destroyed what was built of the new city hall in Lakeland, Minnesota.

The fire started around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday and when firefighters arrived, the structure was fully engulfed in flames.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the fire is being called suspicious and the investigating is ongoing. Anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at 651-430-7882.

The Pioneer Press reports the city hall has been a contentious issue in the small Washington County town. Lakeland mayor elect, Dick Glasgow vowed to stop construction of the city hall as soon as possible.

Mayor, Amy Williams, said arson investigators will be checking out the scene on Monday.
