Fatal crash in Eagan, Minn.

Two people are dead following a crash involving a wrong-way driver in Eagan, Minn. on Thursday night.

53-year-old Eagan resident Daniel Schmidt of Eagan driving eastbound in the westbound lane of Cliff Road when, shortly after 9:30 p.m., his Ford pickup truck collided with a Chevy Equinox traveling westbound, according to Eagan police. The driver of the Chevy Equinox, Monica Strout, 51, of Bloomington, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Schmidt was transported to Region's Hospital, where he later died. There were no passengers in either vehicle. 

Eagan police are still unsure why Schmidt was driving in the westbound lane on Cliff Road, but preliminary investigation results suggests alcohol may be involved. 

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting with the investigation.
