Deadly shooting at vigil for St. Paul murder victim

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - One person is dead after a shooting on St. Paul's eastside Wednesday evening. The victim was attending a gathering to remember Naressa Turner, who was killed in a gang-related shooting 3 years ago.

Wednesday's shooting happened near the intersection of Cypress Street and Reaney Avenue at about 6 p.m. When St. Paul police arrived, they learned a man had been shot and driven to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Synika George James, 37, of St. Paul. 

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

2012 murder of Naressa Turner

Naressa Turner, 20, was sitting in a parked SUV in an alley on the 900 block of Reaney Avenue on the afternoon of Oct. 14, 2012 when a masked gunman opened a back door, uttered Turner's nickname, "Nu Nu," then shot her. Turner died at the scene.

20-year old Joseph Campbell was sentenced to life without parole in Turner’s murder. Turner's family testified that she feared for her life because some people thought she witnessed a gang murder. Turner fled to Atlanta with her daughter, but had returned to St. Paul for a visit.

There was also a shooting just a block away from a vigil for Turner on Oct. 15, 2012.
