Daughter killed, mother injured in St. Paul crosswalk accident

A female pedestrian was killed and her mother was injured after being hit by a vehicle in St. Paul on Tuesday around 7:40 p.m. The deceased victim was identified Wednesday by police as Shelby Kokesch, 24, of Crystal, Minn.

"What happened tonight is a mother's worst nightmare," St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders said. "A mother and daughter went out on the town, and unfortunately one won't be coming home."

Police said Kokesch and her 64-year-old mother were crossing Kellogg Blvd. at Mulberry St. when a vehicle in the left-hand lane failed to yield, and struck both the victims in the crosswalk. The driver is cooperating with police and allegedly did not see the pedestrians.

"Weather was not ideal tonight, rainy, wet," Linders said.

According to police, bystanders immediately called 9-1-1. When emergency crews arrived, they performed CPR on the daughter who did not survive.

Police said the mother is hospitalized at Region's but will survive. Preliminary investigation does not show the driver to have been using drugs or alcohol. Investigators are on scene trying to determine the cause of the accident.
