2 charged after fatal downtown Minneapolis shooting

A man has died after he was shot Wednesday night in downtown Minneapolis.

Police responded to the shooting around 9 p.m. Wednesday at the 1400 block of Portland Avenue South. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition until he died on Sunday.

Darryll Wilkes, 26, and his brother James Wilkes, 28, of Minneapolis are both in custody related to the shooting.

Wilkes was charged with second-degree murder and James Wilkes was charged with aiding an offender-accomplice after the fact.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to a shots fired in the 1400 block of Portland Avenue. When they arrived, someone told them the shot came from inside the building. Police eventually found the victim lying on his apartment floor with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Witnesses said Darryll Wilkes argued with the victim, pulled out a gun and shot him. His brother then left with him and drove Darryll from the scene, the complaint states.
