Freyda Nelson is a 8th grader from Blaine and Emma Antoni is a sophomore from Otsego. They are state champs, and both won the national championship in their respective weight classes in Spokane, Washington in April. Now they're headed to Mexico City as part of the U15 team representing the USA at the Pan American Championships July 23rd - 25th. 

Trail of Small Wonders opens in St. Louis Park

A miniature world full of handmade dwellings for fairies and elves returns to the Westwood Hills Nature Center in St. Louis Park. The Trail of Small Wonders is a free event in which community members including artists, families and kids make fairy houses which are placed around the paved trails at the nature center. There is a free opening day festival on Monday, July 13th from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. If the parking lot is full, attendees can park at the middle school and take the short shuttle bus to and from the park. Westwood Hills Nature Center is located at 8300 West Franklin Avenue. The event is hosted by St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts.

North American Bridge Championships underway in Minneapolis

Thousands of people are in Minneapolis to compete in ten days of bridge play. The North American Bridge Championships are underway at the Convention Center. The tournament is drawing people of all ages including 130 youth players under the age of 20 and 30 collegiate teams and a mix of recreational and professional players. There is also an opportunity to learn the game on Sunday, July 12th from 1 p.m. 6 p.m. The class is $25 when you pre-register online.

Learning Garden Tour highlights ten diverse landscapes

The Hennepin County Master Gardener Volunteer Learning Garden Tour is happening Saturday, July 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This year's tour will open up ten gardens across Southern Hennepin County. Each garden is at a private residence of a Master Gardener. It showcases research-based techniques and varied designs with experts on-hand to give advice and answer questions. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the tour. 

Sweet Lou's moves into St. Louis Park

A successful pop-up has opened a permanent location in St. Louis Park. Sweet Lou’s Craft Sausage & Butchery started in 2021 with small pop-ups at the farmer’s market. Then owners Louisa Farhat and Tim Dubay added a truck. Now they've found a home in St. Louis Park. The shop is a meat market, deli, and a coffee bar. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They're located at 6318 Minnetonka Blvd.

Hamel Rodeo returns to Corcoran Lions Park

This year’s Hamel Rodeo is July 9th - 12th with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. and a Saturday matinee on July 11th at 1 p.m. Every performance includes bareback bronc riding, tie down roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, cowgirl's barrel racing, and bull riding. Tickets range in price from $20-$28. There are free pony rides before every performance. 

Going inside The Basilica of Saint Mary renovation

Nearly 120 years ago, construction began on The Basilica of Saint Mary in downtown Minneapolis. Today, this landmark is undergoing a massive renovation. They're working on nearly everything from the ornate ceiling to the stained glass, the pews and even the organ is getting refreshed. This project started in 2024, and the interior portion is slated to be completed by March 2027, in time for Palm Sunday. Despite the scope of the project, the Basilica is still open for worshipping in the lower level.

Fine arts gallery invites babies to explore the collection

An art museum in the northeast metro is welcoming in a new generation of art lovers, babies! The Cafesjian Art Trust in Shoreview offers baby, preschool and family time at the gallery. The CAT is free to visit, and there are guided tours on Thursday and Friday. The museum was established in 2022 by the family of Gerard Cafesjian to bring free and accessible contemporary art to Shoreview. The collection features nearly 3,000 works of art.

Weekend Event: Back to the Fifties Weekend

It's the 52nd MSRA Back to the Fifties Weekend. There will be nearly 10,000 street rods, customs, classics, and restored vehicles, all dating from 1964 and earlier lining the streets of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The show runs June 19th – 21st, 2026. There are also State Fair food vendors, kids activities and live music.

Dancers rehearse for Special Olympics opening ceremony

 The Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics USA Games will take place Saturday night, June 20th at 6:30pm at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. We visited rehearsals for the creative segment 'Calling all Champions.' Professional dancers from Collide Theatrical will perform alongside four dancers from Interact Center for Performing and Visual Arts. They'll dance to original music from Sounds of Blackness and spoken-word artist NUR-D.

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship returns to Hazeltine National Golf Club June 25th - 28th. This week and next, the club is closed to 'rest' before the big event. The grounds crew is doing the opposite as they prepare the course for the cameras.

Researchers studying peony patch at Landscape Arboretum

For the last four years, a team of researchers at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has been studying several patches of flowers in the southwest metro. They're trying to find  the varieties that will withstand weather, pests, and disease. They're currently studying peonies, magnolia trees, and weigelas. The research plots are not open to the public though they occasionally host tours.

Weekend event: Antique Motorcycle Show at the fairgrounds

History on two wheels is on display at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds this weekend. The Viking Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America is hosting a show and swap at the Eco Experience building June 12th and 13th. There are more than 100 bikes on display spanning 1913 to 1991. The show is $10 to attend, while kids 12 and under are free.

Ono Hawaiian Plates returns to North Loop

Ono Hawaiian Plates specializes in Hawaiian comfort food and big portions. It is on Washington Avenue with a stunning patio that seats 60. Ono First opened in the North Loop Galley Food Hall six years ago. Their new location will be open Tuesday through Sunday.

Mini golf with a view returns to Walker Art Center

Golf and art collide on the rooftop of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The Skyline Mini Golf course has opened for the summer season, and that includes a new artist-designed hole. It's called Indhaha Dayaxa (Eyes of the Moon) and it's created by Ifrah Mansour. It's composed of woven bamboo lattice and East African fabric incased in a resin finish. Skyline Mini Golf is available Wednesday through Sunday. It's $12 for non-members and $10 for members. Kids five and under are free with a paid adult.

Volunteers needed to pack one million meals

A local non-profit has set a goal of filling three shipping containers of meals for children in need, in just two days. Feed my Starving Children is planning its 10th Pack at the Park event. They're hoping to get 3,000 volunteers to join them at Target Field June 10th and 11th.  There will be volunteers of all abilities, ages 5 and up for two-hour shifts. It'll take place inside the Thrivent Club. Sign-ups are available on the Feed My Starving Children website.

Edina Art Fair begins for 59th year

The Edina Art Fair returns June 5th - 7th at the intersection of 50th and France Avenue. There are 250 artists, food trucks and restaurants, three beverage gardens, two stages of live music and a kids zone.  Metro Transit will be giving free rides to the Art Fair and there's free shuttle service from Edina City Hall to the fair Saturday and Sunday.

A group of Twin Cities seniors are defying stereotypes and living out their rockstar dreams. The talented Alive & Kickin' performers are hitting the stage this weekend for A&K Across the U.S.A. The show runs June 5th - 7th at the Bloomington Center for the Arts.

Cantus vocal ensemble takes on Dolly Parton hits

Premiere vocal ensemble, Cantus is bringing the songs of Dolly Parton to the stage with fresh interpretations. The show will cover her classics like “Jolene," “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.” Cantus Presents, COVERS: Dolly & Friends runs through June 7th at the Luminary Arts Center at 700 N 1st St. in Minneapolis.
