Sauna culture curiosity inspires creation of sauna village in Minneapolis
The Great Northern Festival is back and one of this year?s signature events is the opening of Sauna Village. It?s hosted on the grounds of The Market at Malcom Yards in Minneapolis. There are eight different sauna companies represented and each offer a slightly different sauna experience. They also have several cold plunge tubs lining the center of the village. Show time for the country?s top cats
Hundreds of the nation?s top cats are on their way to St. Paul to compete in the 46th annual Saintly City Cat Club Championship. There are more than 40 breeds represented including Persians, Ragdolls and Maine Coon, as well as lesser known breeds such as Bangels, Cornish Rex and Sphynx. There?s even a category for household cats. The show begins on Saturday at 9am at the St. Paul RiverCentre and concludes on Sunday at 3pm with the caping and crowning of the top male and female household cats. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Three Rivers Park District is hosting several ice fishing events with a guide to explain all the how-tos. The next family ice fishing events are in February. Dashfire opens experimental cocktail room in NE Minneapolis
Dashfire moved into a new facility on Central Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis. The space will house all their production, a new tasting room called ?Elusive Botanical Bar,? and their laboratory. They?re asking patrons to become part of the experiment by trying their creations and taking notes. In fact, visitors can see into their lab through a large glass window; getting a glimpse of what goes into creating their bitters, syrups and spirits. The tasting room is open Wednesday through Saturday.

The winter flower show is now open at the sunken garden at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. This display features pinks and purples that are perfect for the upcoming Valentine?s Holiday. The show will be in place through March 20. Also happening this weekend, a Tropical Oasis celebration from Jan. 14-16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be free family and kids activities including crafts, games and interactive stations. Guests will encounter stingrays, frogs, an anaconda and Chloe the sloth in the Tropical Encounters exhibit. And on Sunday afternoon, ?Music Under the Glass.? The live performances will take place in the tropical gardens with beer and wine available.

Don?t trash it, fix it! Hennepin County to offer free Fix-It Clinic this weekend
Household items break all the time, but in an effort to keep those items out of the landfill and help people gain valuable repair skills, Hennepin County offers a Fix-It Clinic once a month. The clinic is free and open to the public. People can bring in anything that they can carry for fixing from snow blowers to lamps and coats or dog toys that need mending. The volunteers will not only do their best to fix the item, but they?ll also walk the person through the process in hopes they gain the confidence to do some fixing on their own in their home. The next clinic is Saturday January 14th at the Southdale Library. It will run from noon to 4pm, but the cutoff for items is 3:30pm. February?s clinic will take place at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis on Sunday the 12th.

They?ve partnered with Entourage Events Group to create a winter activities hub. Groups can book a variety of winter experiences like snow shoeing, sled dog rides, ice fishing, fat tire biking and even sauna experiences. What?s old is new again in the dining industry. Supper Clubs are popping up all over the Twin Cities. The newest addition is in Shakopee, in the former Dangerfield?s space. While the main floor of Shakopee House gives off 1920?s glam, the basement offers something quite unexpected. The Rum Row Tiki Bar is all about escapism. At the same time, it?s an ode to the restaurants past. During renovations, the team discovered a suitcase in the walls. Inside were post cards, bottles of rum and drink recipes. The restaurant owner was able to figure out who?s briefcase it was and even spoke with his family. He was a rum-runner during prohibition who had dreams of opening is own bar. They?ve done it for him in the basement of Shakopee House. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday.

A half-mile ice maze has opened at Viking Lakes in Eagan for "Winter Skolstice," an winter event with a warming house, curling and pond hockey. The maze will be open through Feb. 19.

One of the largest ice attractions in the state is now open at a winery in Delano just west of the metro. Fountain Hill Winery teamed up with The Ice Palace, a company based in Idaho, to open the winter experience. Production on the nearly 2 acre site started in November. It will continue to grow and more features will be added throughout the winter. The palace has a bridge, tunnels, slides, towers and fire pits. There also food trucks on site, authentic brick-oven pizza and wine available in the Fountain Hill tasting room. The winery and ice palace are open Tuesday through Saturday.

At Cookie Cart, the bakery is a classroom where teens are learning skills to set them up for successful futures. Cookie Cart is a non-profit with two locations, North Minneapolis, 1119 W Broadway Avenue, and St. Paul, 946 Payne Avenue. The cookie recipes came from Sister Jean, who started the non-profit in 1988.

Nowhere Haunted House has created the Yule Scream event. It?s part haunted house, part escape room, part theater. The group behind the Inver Grove Heights haunted house dove into winter folklore to come up with the storyline. The event is about 45 minutes long and will take place over just four nights, December 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th. It is recommended for people 12 and up and tickets should be purchased ahead of time online.

The 22 original buildings that make up Dakota City include a post office, general store, and a 1900?s era farmhouse. Kids can meet Santa, send letters to the North Pole, ride in a horse-drawn trolley and learn about life before electricity and running water.
