Naz Reid has high school jersey retired in front of Timberwolves teammates

The Minnesota Timberwolves are at the New York Knicks Friday night, and it’s a homecoming of sorts for Naz Reid.

Reid is from New Jersey, and was back at his old high school, Roselle Catholic, for a special honor on Thursday. It was "Naz Reid Night" at the school, and his Timberwolves’ teammates were by his side as he had his No. 5 jersey retired in the high school gym.

Reid graduated from Roselle Catholic in 2018 and was the No. 18-ranked player nationally.

One season at LSU

Why it matters: Naz Reid took his talents to LSU for one season, starting 32 games and being second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game. He led the team in rebounding and and was second in field goals made.

He left for the NBA Draft after one season.

His Timberwolves’ career

Digging deeper: Reid signed with the Timberwolves after not being selected in the 2019 NBA Draft. He did enough in training camp to earn a roster spot and contract. He was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year last season, as the Timberwolves made a run to the Western Conference Finals.

Reid signed a three-year contract extension worth nearly $42 million, last offseason. He likely would’ve made more money elsewhere, but wanted to stay in Minnesota. Reid is under contract through the 2026-27 season.

He’s played all 40 games this year as the Timberwolves are 21-19 and eighth in the Western Conference. Reid is averaging 13 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He’s also a fan-favorite.
