Puppies become ill after Minn. group rescues them from Kentucky
PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) - A Prior Lake, Minn. animal rescue group was expanding its operations when 12 of their rescue dogs got suddenly sick with parvovirus.
Protecting Paws Animal Rescue bought a van last Tuesday to double up on their rescues, taking it south with another vehicle to bring back forty puppies from Kentucky.
Almost immediately after they arrived in Minnesota, the dogs started getting sick. Two puppies died, 10 are hanging on and being treated at two veterinary clinics.
“The first one started showing symptoms the very next day, kind of just not eating real well maybe a little extra sleepy and then over the course of the weekend started to deteriorate," Becky Deluca with Protecting Paws said.
Others could still get sick as the incubation period for the virus won’t be up until next week.
Symptoms of parvo include vomiting, diarrhea and blood in the stool. The sick pups are now quarantined and getting fluids and medications. The group is considering selling the van it just bought to help pay for the cost of care. The vets are donating their time and just charging for cost of medication, but it’s still at least $1,000 per dog.
