OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Last month, 4-year-old Na’vaun Lamarii Price Jackson was able to sip through a straw.
This week, the Oakland boy who accidentally shot himself in the head in March, was talking, saying words like "thank you" and "Grandpa," as family members took videos of his progress from his hopsital bed at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland.
"What a mighty God we serve," said Na'vaun's relative Ramon Price, who has been posting videos on Facebook of the boy for the world to see.
His family is grateful for every move he makes, every word he utters -- which he wasn't doing a few weeks ago.
Doctors told his family he likely would be brain dead or never walk again after he got a hold of a gun in the home of his mother's ex-boyfriend on March 27. He was immediately put on life support and placed in a medically induced coma.
Also this week, the heavy bandages that were wrapped around his head were mostly gone, showing a small scab between his eyes where the bullet struck.
He is not walking yet, but he is defying the odds and going to physical therapy every day.
A couple of week ago, his mother Brijjanna Price, said gratefully: “Everything the doctors saying, God says different.”
After the accident, Price’s estranged boyfriend, Terrence L. Wilson, told Oakland police he slept with the gun under his pillow and had forgotten to lock it up.
Wilson was charged earlier this month with one count of child abuse, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of first-degree criminal firearm storage, according to court documents filed by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
Price told police she was aware a gun was in the house, but did not know where it was stored.
His family has set up a GoFundMe to pay for medical expenses.
