Minnesota weather: Messy commute after Twin Cities' largest snowfall of season

A winter storm dumped several inches of snow across the Twin Cities metro Wednesday, and record-breaking snow in northern Minnesota. This is making for a messy morning commute Thursday.

This snowstorm marked the largest snowstorm of this season in the Twin Cities (at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport), which picked up 7.6 inches of snow. Meanwhile, much of northern Minnesota picked up about 5 to 10 inches of snow, while the Arrowhead region saw 1 to 3 feet.

7:38 a.m. - Crashes, jackknifed semi-trucks in west-central MN

The Minnesota State Patrol says it's responding to several crashes and jackknifed semi-trucks on slippery roads.

"Please drive with care and move over to give those on the side of the roads some room," Sgt. Jesse Grabow says.

Here's a look at snow totals as of Thursday morning: 

  • Hovland: 38.6 inches (preliminary total — could be a 24-hour snowfall record for Minnesota)
  • Lutsen: 24 inches
  • Chisholm: 10.8 inches
  • Ely: 9.5 inches
  • Duluth: 8 inches
  • Granite Falls: 7 inches
  • Savage: 7 inches
  • Chanhassen: 6.5 inches
  • Bemidji: 6 inches
  • Shakopee: 6 inches
  • Hopkins: 5 inches
  • Minneapolis: 4.5 inches
  • Fridley: 3 inches
  • Coon Rapids: 1.4 inches

7 a.m. - Main interstates improving, ramps slippery

In the Twin Cities, the main interstates are mostly plowed and conditions are improving, but ramps are slippery and most secondary roads are still covered in snow.

This is making for a sloppy morning commute. 

According to MnDOT's website, most major roadways in the Twin Cities are partially covered in snow or slush. Roads in western Minnesota are in worse shape, with many completely covered in snow. 

On the North Shore of Minnesota, which picked up 1 to 3 feet of snow, roads are still partially or completely covered in snow.

A winter storm dumped more than 5 inches of snow in Minneapolis on Wednesday. Here's a timelapse video.

6:42 a.m. - Updated snow totals

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport picked up 7.6 inches of snow as of 6 a.m., marking the most snow in a single storm for the Twin Cities this winter. Chanhassen picked up 6.5 inches.

Meanwhile, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, saw 2.5 inches as of 6 a.m.

Winter storm slams Minnesota: Timelapse video

Here's a timelapse video of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, from Feb. 18 to Feb. 19, when a winter storm rolled in and dumped several inches of snow. The same storm brought more than 3 feet of snow to areas of northern Minnesota.

Expect slow-moving traffic Thursday morning, with crashes and spinouts reported across the Twin Cities metro as the snow tapers off Thursday morning. 

Roads in the Twin Cities metro are partially or completely covered with snow or slush and ice, according to MnDOT's website. Well over 100 plows are out across the metro trying to clean up after the winter storm. 

Meanwhile, so no travel advisories are still in place along Minnesota's North Shore. I-35 from near Scanlon to South Boundary Avenue is under a no travel advisory.

MN weather: Unusual nature of this February winter storm explained

FOX 9's Cody Matz explains the unusual nature of this winter storm that dumped up to 7 inches in the Twin Cities metro and up to three feet of snow along Lake Superior in Minnesota's Arrowhead region. 

Plows are out in full force across the Twin Cities and much of Minnesota to clear roadways ahead of the morning commute. However, many roads in the Twin Cities and western Minnesota are covered in snow (see map above).

This is expected to make for a slow, messy commute on Thursday.

  • Shakopee: 6 inches
  • Chanhassen: 5.7 inches
  • MSP Airport: 5.6 inches
  • Hopkins: 5 inches
  • Minneapolis: 4.5 inches
  • Fridley: 3 inches
  • Coon Rapids: 1.4 inches

This marks one of the largest snow storms of the winter at MSP Airport.
