First Avenue partners with Wrecktangle Pizza on new restaurant

It?s been quite the year for the Wrecktangle Pizza crew. They were named ?Best Pizza in America? in early 2023 and people flocked to get their hands on the Detroit-style pizza with a Minnesota twist. Now they?ve partnered with First Avenue to open a new spot in St. Paul that?s offering more than just pizza. Wrestaurant at the Palace will have all the favorites plus new creations. It?s next door to the Palace Theatre which is co-operated by First Avenue. The Wrestaurant at the Palace is at 33 West 7th Place. They?re open seven days a week.

Haunting experience comes to Mall of America

It?s getting spooky at the Mall of America. The crew behind American Monsters has created a brand new, one-of-a-kind haunted attraction at the mall. It?s located on level 2 in the former vaccination site. The story-driven haunt is called Onionhead?s Revenge. It?s based off a Louisiana folktale so the area has been transformed into the bayou. There are different levels of tickets and experiences within the attraction. It opens Friday, Sept. 15 and will run through Halloween. It?s a no-touch experience but it?s still quite spooky so its recommended that kids be 10 and up.

Pickleball gyms are popping up all over the metro, but a new one in Maple Grove is serving up more than just aces. Pints & Paddle has plenty of courts to play, but there?s also a large restaurant and taproom. The Kitchen has an extensive menu including hot-honey cheese curds and sticky ribs, more than four dozen self-serve taps with plenty of beer, cider, wine, cocktail and mocktail options. The pickleball courts open at 6 a.m. daily. It?s located at 15450 Grove Circle N, Maple Grove.

MN Landscape Arboretum's delicate pumpkin patch

The Glass Pumpkin Patch event is back at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. This year, a dozen award-winning glass artists have hand-blown 5,000 pumpkins and placed them in the gardens in and around the Snyder Building. The weekend event will include free glass-blowing demonstrations and opportunities to chat with the artists. The event runs from Sept. 15-17. All the pumpkins are for sale. Tickets to the Arb must be purchased ahead of time. The pumpkin patch experience is included in general admission tickets.

A barbecue spot tucked off Highway 7 in Minnestrista is drawing folks from all over the Twin Cities and beyond. Buddy Boy Fine BBQ is 20 years in the making for the Cox family. They started with a food truck that they took all over the country. Executive Chef Joe even spent a few years sleeping in his car while working the food truck on the oil fields. He says he learned the art of wood-fired cooking from his mom who was raised in the mountains of Taiwan in a village without electricity. Buddy Boy Fine BBQ is open Wednesday to Saturday. It?s located at 8175 MN-7, Minnetrista.

At Fawkes Alley Coffee in Loring Park, 100% of the profits will go right back to the community?s youth; more specifically, the Futsal Society. Futsal is an alternative to club soccer for kids and families who can?t afford the costs of club sports. The profits from the coffee shop will help sustain the organization and its growth across the Twin Cities. Fawkes Alley even employs the teens who play in the league. The shop is open daily from 8am to 4pm and serves Groundwire Coffee out of Northfield, plus fresh pastries. It?s located at 1621 Harmon Place in Minneapolis.

Fall destinations are opening for the season and an orchard just south of Jordan was recently named Best Apple Orchard in Minnesota. Ferguson?s Minnesota Harvest came under new ownership last year. The Ferguson family has added several new attractions and upgrades. There?s apple picking, a corn maze, jumping pads, a cow train, apple launchers, a pumpkin patch plus a caf? and Cider Barn for adults. Ferguson?s Minnesota Harvest is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Nov. 5t It?s located at 8251 Old Highway 169 Blvd.

Save Minnesota?s prairies by harvesting seeds

Minnesota?s prairie is dwindling and every year hundreds of volunteers help collect wildflower seed that?s used to restore thousands of acres of prairie managed by Three Rivers Park District. They host events all across the metro through October. They train each attendee to identify plants while also learning about the history of Minnesota?s prairies. A reservation is required to attend the events.

Help track monarch butterflies before their journey

Three Rivers Park District is looking for citizen scientists. There are events throughout August and September that aids in researching an endangered species. The park system will be training visitors on how to catch and tag Monarch Butterflies. The butterflies will soon be leaving on their 2,000-mile journey to Mexico and tagging them can help scientists understand their travel patterns and protect the habitats they visit along the way. These events happen all across the metro and you do need to sign up ahead of time to attend.

It?s said that having a hobby can lead to improved mental health, and if you don?t know where to start, check out the fall catalogue for the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Classes begin Sept. 5. They are offering everything from ceramics to weaving, jewelry making, photography, flower arranging, painting and even the fiery ancient Japanese ceramics technique called Raku firing. Classic western 'Shane' comes to the Guthrie

The Western novel "Shane," published in 1949 has sprung to life on stage at The Guthrie Theater. Renowned playwright Karen Zacar�as uses this version to interrogate the assumptions and myths of the American West. The show is playing now and runs through Aug. 27. It stars William DeMerritt as Shane and Ricardo Chavira as Joe Starrett.

Musical festival coming Minneapolis porches

A successful music festival in Boston inspired the first-ever Uptown Porchfest. It will take place on Aug, 19 from 1-5 p.m. There are 30 different bands playing 19 porches. The porches are spread out over the Wedge Neighborhood so you can wander and enjoy different bands on every block. The event is free to attend. Because parking can be challenging in the area, attendees are highly encouraged to take public transportation, bike, walk or ride share.

Victory Garden marks 80th year

A Minneapolis garden established in the 40?s as a victory garden, is still playing a significant role in the Longfellow community. In fact, it?s one of two remaining victory gardens still in use today. Today there are 190 plots and more than 250 gardeners, including a waitlist to get a spot, and that?s something to celebrate. The Dowling Community Garden volunteers are hosting a party on Saturday August 19th from 11am to 2pm. The sprawling garden is located at 46th Avenue and 39th Street S.

The Amazing Acro-Cats bring their talents to Minneapolis

The Heart of the Beast Theatre is hosting a troupe of domestic cats that can ride skateboards, play instruments and charm audiences. The Acro-Cats were created by animal trainer, Samantha Martin. The group has been on tour for 28 weeks and roll around the country in a giant tour bus equipped with a Cat-io fort for the 13 traveling felines. The show runs through Sunday, Aug. 13, at the theater on Lake Street in Minneapolis. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to local nonprofit, Ruff Start Rescue.

Remote-controlled powerboats hit the waterways of Edina

Line up the boats, it?s time for a parade. The Edina Model Yacht Club will have their boats out patrolling the waters of Centennial Lakes Park Sunday evening in Edina. The nonprofit club has been in existence since 1991. Today they have 80 members who operate remote-controlled vessels that range from battleships to sail boats, powerboats and even a Minion tug boat. Lighthouse Night and Torchlight Concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 13. It is free to attend. The boats will be out starting around 5 p.m. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. with the John Philip Sousa Memorial Band. The night concludes with fireworks.

Open Eye Theatre brings theater to park near you

This summer, you can let the theater come to you. The award-winning crew behind Open Eye Theatre has brought back the Driveway Tour series and added a new show. Molly and the Magic Boot is the newest story utilizing puppets. Open Eye Theatre has dozens of shows lined up all over the metro. Many of the performances are free and will take place in public parks, libraries and city centers. The dates and locations for those shows can be found on the Open Eye Theatre website.

Cat lovers unite for Cat Video Festival

This week is all about the cats. The Cat Video Festival is back and bigger than ever. It will take place on August 3rd at CHS Field in St. Paul. This year?s charity partner is Caring for Cats, a North St. Paul no-kill shelter and foster network. The non-profit started in 2001. In 2021 the organization opened the doors to a new a state-of-the-art cat shelter. One dollar of every ticket sold will benefit Caring for Cats.
