Woman's death ruled homicide after run over by boyfriend

The death of a woman, who was struck by a car driven by her boyfriend, is now being considered a homicide, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Medical Examiner's report states 49-year-old Stacey Buckanaga died as a result of her injuries from the June 6 incident. She died on August 21.

According to the criminal complaint, Minneapolis police responded to two domestic calls at a home in the 3100 block of 23rd Avenue South. The couple, Buckanaga and 50-year-old Jeffrey Anthony Cruz, was arguing because Buckanaga did not want Cruz to drive after drinking.

After police left, Cruz ran over Buckanaga while she was attempting to block his vehicle from leaving the alley. Cruz drove away and left her lying unresponsive in the alley.

Police later arrested Cruz. He was charged with first degree assault, criminal vehicular operation, gross negligence and leaving the scene of a crash. He may face additional charges now that Buckanaga has passed away.

Cruz is in custody at Hennepin County Jail.
