Slick conditions cause multiple crashes in metro

FOX 9's Se Kwon was live on the road to report on a slick morning commute after snow caused multiple crashes Thursday.

What we know:

While there wasn't a lot of snow in the Twin Cities metro on Wednesday, some of the roads are still slick on Thursday morning.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation's website, as of 6 a.m., there's light slush or ice on road surfaces in the Twin Cities metro area. Some roads in southern and northern Minnesota are covered in snow or have ice on the surface.

MnDOT has reported several crashes and spinouts, including a serious crash involving a semi-truck on I-94 eastbound at Dayton Parkway, just south of Rogers. The crash closed a section of the interstate and drivers were being rerouted away from the scene near Brockton Lane. As of around 6:15 a.m., the right lane is open to traffic.

What we don't know:

It's unclear whether any injuries have been reported or the circumstances of the crash.

Big picture view:

There have been numerous crashes reported in and around the Twin Cities metro on Thursday morning, some of which have involved injuries.

Wright County posted on social media that the stretch of I-94 from Clear Water to Maple Grove has been an especially slick spot for drivers. MnDOT's website indicated at least nine crashes and spinouts on that stretch of road as of 7 :30 a.m. Thursday.

As of 7:50 a.m., drivers on eastbound I-94 in Albertville is being diverted at County Road 37 due to a crash underneath a bridge, potentially involving three semi-trucks. Traffic is backed up an estimated two mines due to the collision, according to Wright County's post on X.

Meanwhile, a Maple Grove police officer was injured while responding to a crash just before 5 a.m. on Thursday. The Minnesota State Patrol said the officer was in the area of eastbound I-94 and Brockton Lane when the squad car was struck by another driver from behind. The officer was transported to North Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other driver was uninjured, according to authorities.

In St. Paul, 43 drivers were involved in two separate crashes on Warner Road due to icy conditions. Four people sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Minnesota State Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow posted on X that troopers in west central Minnesota have been responding to several crashes, jackknifed semis, and spinouts due to the slick road conditions.

The State Patrol has not released official crash numbers yet, but told FOX 9 there had been 30 crashes statewide from midnight to approximately 7:30 a.m.
