Minnesota weather: Steady, light snowfall all day Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Saturday saw steady, light snowfall all day, bringing slick roads and cold temperatures.

What we know:

The snow is starting to move out of Minnesota Saturday night, and is expected to be fully gone by Sunday morning. 

With the snow leaving, cold temperatures will come in and linger through the week.

7 p.m. - Snow emergency in Belle Plaine

A snow emergency has been declared in Belle Plaine. Off-street parking rules are in place until the streets are cleared. 

We are now on the back edge of the snowstorm, but for now, the curtain of snow is lingering over the state. The windchill is bringing the feels-like temperatures down to single digits in some areas. 

The snowstorm will eventually move east and out of Minnesot around midnight. 

4 p.m. - Slick road conditions

As the snow continues to fall, roads are becoming slick and icy. 

According to MnDOT's 511 map, most roads in the Twin Cities metro have snow covering the roadways. 

In southern Minnesota, some roads are completely covered with snow or drifting snow, while some have light snow and ice on the roads. Most of the roads in those areas are reported to have icy and slippery conditions.

3:30 p.m. - Snow emergency in Northfield 

A snow emergency has been declared in Northfield that will be in effect from 10 p.m. Nov. 29 to 10 p.m. Dec. 1. No parking is allowed on any city streets during that time, and trash and recycling bins are not allowed on city streets. 

Residential streets will be plowed on Nov. 1, and downtown snow removal will be on Dec. 1.

3 p.m. - Snow starting to accumulate 

 Snow is starting to accumulate in the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota. The snow is light, and we are only getting about a half an inch an hour. 

The blanket of snow is lingering over the Twin Cities and the southern part of the state. 

The snow is expected to end tonight and temperatures will drop. 

2:30 p.m. - Snow emergency in New Hope

The snow continues to fall and is expected to continue into the afternoon. 

The City of New Hope has declared a snow emergency starting at 2 a.m. Sunday. During the snow emergency, parking is not allowed on all city streets until the snow has ended and roads have been fully cleared from curb to curb. Vehicles parked on the street could get ticketed and towed.

Crashes and flight delays are being reported across Minnesota.

Drivers are advised to use caution for any travel plans.

Snowy roads are leading to slick surfaces and other travel issues. 

The snow is light and fluffy in the Twin Cities with consistent wind that can lead to blowing snow in open areas. 

Mid-morning Minnesota winter weather update

Light snowfall in the Twin Cities area continues as heavier snow accumulates further south. 

FOX 9's Jared Piepenburg says the metro will see blowing and drifting snow with some slick spots on the road. 

The National Weather Service is advising the public to delay travel if possible. 

The National Weather Service also shared the snowfall total at Sioux Falls Airport. 

10 a.m. Minnesota winter weather update

The National Weather Service said that 2 to 4 inches have fallen in southern Minnesota so far, leading to deteriorating road conditions.

Minnesota road conditions

Big picture view:

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the most treacherous road conditions are in the southern half of Minnesota, with the Twin Cities seeing only partially covered roads, mostly in the southwest part of the metro.

More snow and ice is being reported in the western and southern parts of Minnesota.

Saturday forecast

What to expect:

A winter system will bring snow to the region on Saturday. 

The heaviest snow will fall across Iowa and off toward Chicago, with some areas seeing 10–15 inches of snow. 

Southern Minnesota will pick up snow with the Twin Cities seeing around 2–5 inches, with the northern Metro seeing the lower end amounts in comparison to the southern half of the Twin Cities.

Southern Minnesota could see upwards of 5–9 inches of snow, possibly more.

Temperatures will stay fairly steady all day with the lower to mid-20s this afternoon.

Extended forecast 

What's next:

The wind picks up tonight into Sunday morning, creating some minor blowing and drifting snow.

The sky looks to show a lot more sunshine on Sunday. 

The rest of the forecast stays cold with highs ranging from upper teens to lower 20s with little to no precipitation.
