Stillwater chef wins title, top ranking at International Pizza Expo

STILLWATER, Minn. (FOX 9) - A Stillwater pizza maker is earning global recognition after taking home top honors at one of the world’s largest pizza competitions.

What we know:

Anthony Gilbert, owner of Melt Pizza Company, competed against more than 780 contestants at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas, securing 5th place overall in Detroit-Style Pizza and 1st place in the Northwestern Division (Non-Traditional category).

Gilbert prepared all his dough and ingredients at his Stillwater restaurant, using a three-day fermentation process before transporting them cross-country to Las Vegas to ensure consistency and quality.

"This is only my third time competing, and to place at this level against the best pizza makers in the world is incredibly rewarding," said Gilbert. "At the same time, it motivates me to keep refining and come back even stronger next year." 

The competition pizzas highlight Melt Pizza Company’s model, focusing on craftsmanship, balance and creativity that define the brand.

Gilbert’s recent win builds on a strong competitive track record for Melt Pizza Company.

He first earned the Northwestern Division title for Non-Traditional in 2024, and in 2025, a team member finished in the top three for Detroit-style Pizza. This year marks Gilbert’s first time entering two categories, and he was also selected as a judge for the 2026 International Pizza Competition. 

Gilbert will continue to compete internationally, with his next event scheduled for June 2026 in Naples, Italy, and more competitions planned throughout the year.

"As our business grows, it creates more opportunities for us to give back to the community that’s supported us from the beginning," Gilbert said. "We’re incredibly grateful for that support and proud to represent Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley on a global stage."
