39 personalized license plates revoked for being offensive

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is revoking 39 personalized license plates for being offensive, according to a DPS spokesman.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicles division (DVS) reviewed all 98,500 personalized plates after a complaint was made earlier this year of an anti-Muslim plate. Since this initial complaint, officials say there have been several other complaints. The entire review took weeks to complete.

Minnesota law says no words or combination of letters on personalized plates can be “of an obscene, indecent or immoral nature, or be of a nature that would offend public morals or decency.”

Once the review was completed, 49 plates were flagged for further review. DVS sent letters to the owners asking them why they should be able to keep the plates. Twenty owners responded with an explanation, three of which were accepted by DVS management. Five owners chose to have new plates issued. One person was moving out of state and another owner had died a year ago.

The 39 owners of revoked license plates can choose a different personalized license plate or receive a replacement regular plate for no fee.
