Stanley Cup Playoffs: Can Wild eliminate the Stars?

FOX 9 Sports Director Jim Rich joined All Day before heading to Grand Casino Arena Thursday night, where the Minnesota Wild can eliminate the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Minnesota Wild is hosting the Dallas Stars at Grand Casino Arena in Game 6 of their Stanley Cup Playoff series Thursday night.

With a win, the Wild eliminate the Stars and advance to the Western Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2015. They would play the Colorado Avalanche. With a loss, the two teams head back to Dallas Saturday for a decisive Game 7.

Third period - Wild beat Stars 4-2

The Wild took a 3-2 lead about halfway through the third period. Quinn Hughes scored his second goal of the night, off assists from Brock Faber and Mats Zuccarello. Hughes took a pass and put a shot towards the net, which deflected off a Stars' skater, and there was nothing Jake Oettinger could do.

Hughes has two goals and an assist on the night.

The Wild put the nail in the coffin with about 90 seconds to play. The Stars pulled Oettinger with 3:12 to play for an extra attacker, needing a game-tying goal. Instead, Matt Boldy gained possession of the puck and beat a Dallas defender for an empty-net goal to give the Wild a two-goal lead. It's his fifth goal of the series.

Boldy added another empty-net goal with 14.8 seconds to play.

Second period – Wild, Dallas tied 2-2 after 2 periods

The Wild had multiple chances to take a two-goal lead before the Stars had an answer in the second period. After Yakov Trenin got a penalty for interference, Wyatt Johnston scored for Dallas at the 6:23 mark on assists from Mikkko Rantanen and Matt Duchene.

It is Johnston’s fourth goal of the series.

The Stars took a 2-1 lead over the Wild at the 16:08 mark of the second period. Mavrick Bourque scored on assists from Michael Bunting and Ilya Lyubushkin.

Less than a minute later, the Wild answered. Vladimir Tarasenko tied the game 2-2 on assists from Trenin and Hughes. He gathered a loose puck and had a wide open net, burying a goal with a backhand shot.

First period - Quinn Hughes gives Wild early 1-0 lead

The Minnesota Wild got off to a fast start Thursday night, with a win ending the Stars’ season. The Wild got the first goal at the 6:23 mark of the first period. Quinn Hughes, a trade acquisition during the season, got a pass from Marcus Foligno, waited patiently with a toe drag and scored past Jake Oettinger’s glove side to give the Wild an early 1-0 lead.

Marcus Foligno had a point-blank chance a few minutes later, but Oettinger made a pad save across the crease. The Wild held the Stars to one shot over the first 12 minutes.

Wild without Jonas Brodin for Game 6

What we know:

The Wild will be without defenseman Jonas Brodin for Game 6. Brodin suffered a lower body injury during the first period of Game 5 in Dallas after blocking a shot and did not return.

What we don't know:

Team officials say he is considered day-to-day. It is not known if Brodin would be available if Game 7 is necessary.
