Eyewitness describes Charlie Kirk shooting

Political commentator Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at an event on a college campus in Utah on Wednesday. Kirk was at Utah Valley University on Wednesday as part of Turning Point USA's American Comeback Tour, on college campuses across the U.S. LiveNOW’s Mike Pache is speaking to Michael Maiorano who attended the Charlie Kirk event earlier today.

Graphic video circulating on X shows the moments Charlie Kirk was shot during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He died later after being taken to the hospital. 

Kirk, 31, was speaking at the university for his "America Comeback Tour," according to the co-founder of Turning Point USA’s X account.

The video posted to social media shows Kirk on stage, sitting in a chair, talking into a microphone while sitting under a white tent emblazoned with the slogans "The American Comeback" and "Prove Me Wrong."

A single gunshot was heard and Kirk's head thrust back as he fell. People started screaming and running away, the video shows.

What we know:

Following the shooting, Kirk was rushed from the location by his security team and taken to a local hospital.

President Donald Trump later shared on his Truth Social account that Kirk died Wednesday afternoon.

"The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump wrote.

Manhunt for Charlie Kirk murder suspect

Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and supporter of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot at an event at Utah Valley University. He was 31. Authorities said the gunman, who remains at large, is believed to have fired a single shot from a nearby rooftop in what they described as a "targeted attack." The Utah Department of Public Safety, working with the FBI, is leading the investigation and has launched a manhunt. Two individuals initially considered suspects were later released after questioning.

What we don't know:

A person of interest who was taken into custody was released later on Wednesday evening, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
