BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (FOX 9) - Bloomington police officers exchanged gunfire with a wrong-way driver Wednesday night.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is now investigating the "use-of-force incident."
Bloomington use-of-force investigation
What we know:
According to the Bloomington Police Department, officers saw a wrong-way driver near Old Shakopee Road and Killebrew Drive around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but when the driver didn't, police used two PIT maneuvers to stop the driver.
The driver then refused officers' orders to exit the vehicle, and police deployed a pepperball toward the vehicle, police said.
During an update on Thursday, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges says that a few minutes after the pepperballs were deployed, the suspect "continued his idiotic decisions" and began to open fire on department officers.
Officers then provided "a little bit of lead persuasion to get the man to stop shooting at us," according to Hodges.
The driver, a man, was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital for a hand injury.
"We're grateful today that no one is visiting the undertaker," Hodges said. "Don't come to Bloomington and think you're going to shoot at our cops. You shoot at us, we're going to shoot back."
According to Hodges, none of the 11 officers that responded to the scene were injured during the incident.
Photos from the scene Thursday morning show what appear to be bullet holes in a vehicle that's behind crime-scene tape.
Bloomington police were wearing body cameras that were recording during the incident. No police officers were injured during the incident, police said.
The Minnesota BCA is investigating.
What we don't know:
Police did not say how many officers were involved in the incident.
The Bloomington Police Department will provide an update at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
