Update (9:41 a.m.): One runway has been reopened, but the airport says conditions have not improved much.

Runways are closed at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as crews work to clear them of quickly falling snow.

The airport itself remains open. The runways will be closed until at least 9:30 a.m., at which point officials will reevaluate them, according to an MSP Airport spokesperson.

Departures are delayed by an average of 30 minutes, while arrivals are delayed by an average of 51 minutes. Delays for both arrivals and departures are expected to rise.

It is recommended that travelers contact their airlines for their flight status before coming to the airport.

The airport is typically able to run smoothly amid a snow storm, with carefully coordinated teams able to clear a runway in minutes.

The airport has developed machinery to clear snow from the runways lights, as well as installed huge snowblowers and giant brooms all meant to keep the airport moving in any condition.
