MN weather: Icy morning mix, afternoon rain Thursday

Expect a cold Thursday with below-average temperatures in the 30s. A spring storm is bringing rain, freezing, sleet, and snow to Minnesota on Thursday. FOX 9 meteorologist Jared Piepenburg has the forecast.

A mix of rain, sleet and snow is moving through Minnesota Thursday, with wet and potentially icy conditions expected to last through much of the day.

Wet and cold Thursday

Rainy, icy conditions:

Thursday begins with a wide variety of precipitation across Minnesota. In the Twin Cities metro, a mix of rain and icy precipitation is expected early before transitioning to mainly rain by midday. Further north, precipitation remains more wintry, with a mix of sleet and wet, sloppy snow.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of Minnesota through Thursday. A winter storm warning was in effect for parts of the Twin Cities metro and along the Arrowhead region through noon due to the potential for heavier mixed precipitation and hazardous travel. However, the metro has been downgraded to a winter weather advisory, which is set to expire at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Metro roads are mostly wet, though untreated and residential surfaces may be icy early. Elsewhere, light slush and snow are making for slick travel during the morning commute. Multiple schools are also closed, delayed or have e-learning days due to the weather.

Dig deeper:

Temperatures will barely climb above freezing Thursday, with a cold, northeast wind gusting between 10 and 25 mph. The Twin Cities metro daytime high is around 36 degrees.

The rain will taper off in the evening but cloudy conditions will linger as temperatures dip into the 20s.
