Vikings players react after 27-19 loss to Ravens [FULL]

Vikings players Aaron Jones, Brian O’Neill, Andrew Van Ginkel, Jalen Nailor, Justin Jefferson and Blake Cashman react from the locker room after a 27-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens to fall to 4-5 on the season, and 1-3 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

As good as the Minnesota Vikings looked in a 27-24 win over the Detroit Lions last week, the switch completely flipped in the opposite way against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Vikings committed three turnovers, committed too many penalties and the defense got worn out in a 27-19 loss to Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. They fall to 4-5 on the season at the midway point, and they're 1-3 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

J.J. McCarthy takes ownership of Vikings loss to Ravens [FULL]

Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy spoke with reporters after Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens at U.S. Bank Stadium. McCarthy had two interceptions, and took the blame for the offensive penalties, including eight false starts.

The big play

How it happened:

The big play was a sequence of Vikings’ mistakes that let the Ravens take the lead, and they never gave it back. J.J. McCarthy tried to hit Justin Jefferson on a deep throw on 3rd-and-1 on the first drive of the third quarter, but Jefferson fell and the pass was intercepted. The Ravens got a field goal out of it to take a 12-10 lead.

Myles Price fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Ravens picked it up. Justice Hill capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown, giving Baltimore a 19-10 lead. They extended that lead to 27-13 after Jackson hit Mark Andrews for a fourth quarter touchdown.

"Lose the turnover battle 3-0, and the penalty situation, which we’ve got to get fixed immediately, just not acceptable in any way," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said after the loss. "We’ve got to get it fixed, and we will. There just seemed to be a flinch here and there way, way too much."

Kevin O'Connell calls 13 penalties in Vikings loss 'unacceptable' [FULL]

The Minnesota Vikings had three turnovers and committed 13 penalties in Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. Kevin O'Connell told reporters after the game "it's unacceptable, we've got to get it fixed."

Penalties, turnovers plague Vikings

Why you should care:

McCarthy had two of the Vikings' three turnovers on interceptions, both on deep throws to Justin Jefferson. The offensive line also got flagged for eight false starts, and Dallas Turner got a questionable roughing the passer penalty. On the day, the Vikings committed 13 penalties for 102 yards.

The Ravens got 13 points off three Minnesota turnovers. It was a day of self-inflicted mistakes.

"We try to eliminate them all, and we didn’t do that in any way, shape or form. We’ve got to fix it, we’ve got to understand what was different today than what had been something we felt like we eliminated earlier in the season," O'Connell said.

Does roughing the passer rule need to change?

Dig deeper:

Turner got a textbook sack on Jackson late in the first half, until it wasn’t. The hit drove Jackson to the turf, and with Turner finishing the tackle, he got flagged for roughing the passer.

It gave the Ravens 15 yards, the clock stopped and enough room to end the first half with a field goal to get within 10-9. It was the type of flag that makes football fans want the roughing the passer criteria overhauled.

McCarthy’s rough day

What we know:

McCarthy had a tough game in his fourth NFL start. He finished 20-of-41 for 248 yards, one touchdown to Jalen Nailor and two interceptions. He was sacked once, and pressured throughout the game.

McCarthy continues to take lumps in his first season as the full-time starter.

"It was there, we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. I take full responsibility for the pre-snap procedural penalties, we have three turnovers. Too many things that don’t set us up for success when the clock hits zero," McCarthy said. "As the quarterback, you’re the orchestrator of the orchestra. I take full responsibility for anything that happens on that field. I take full responsibility every single time something goes wrong."

Vikings lose Jonathan Greenard

Why you should care:

To add injury to the defeat, the Vikings lost Jonathan Greenard during the game to a left shoulder injury. He did not return, and O'Connell said after the game he will be evaluated Monday. Greenard had two tackles and a pass defended in the game. For the season, he has 29 tackles and two sacks.
