Grant pulled into a rest area at mile marker 232, where troopers attempted a traffic stop. He exited his vehicle briefly, got back in, and continued driving southbound on I-81, initiating a police pursuit.
Grant pulled over again near mile marker 227 and exited the vehicle with a firearm pointed at his head. A Virginia State Police tactical team and negotiator responded to the scene.

Active shooter near United Rentals in Manassas, search for suspect
Authorities are responding to an active shooter incident Wednesday morning in the 9400 block of Wellington Road in Manassas, Virginia.
Investigators said Grant was a coworker with a North Carolina address. Authorities believe an altercation at the site led to the shooting, though police are still reviewing video evidence and have not determined the exact number of shots fired.
"What we do know at this point is that Mr. Grant came to work this morning, made a statement to a coworker that three people are going to die. He then produced a handgun and began shooting," Keen said. "What we don't know is a motive. That brings no relief to our victims' families. We have to figure out what happened here. What caused this? While some may consider the case closed with the death of Mr. Grant, that brings no closure to the case. Our community is still hurting. The family of United Rentals is still hurting. The families of the victims are still hurting."
Keen noted that police had no prior interactions with Grant before Wednesday's incident.
Numerous other employees were on site at the time of the shooting. Area schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
The investigation is ongoing.
