MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - The holidays are nearly here and people are starting to head to their destinations.
This, of course, means airports and roads are already getting busy. This is gearing up to be the busiest travel season in history.
As much as some may dread it, there are many who get excited to travel. But to brave holiday crowds, it helps to be a kid with a good destination, like one young traveler at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Thursday who said they don’t even know how long their Disney World vacation will last.
The busiest stretch of the year ramped up Thursday with Friday and Saturday marking two of the three busiest days of the year. The top day, however, is the day after Christmas, according to Airlines for America.
“So, we’ll have about 45,000 people coming through security on that day,” said John Welbes, the spokesperson for MSP Airport. “A normal day is in the mid-30,000s.”
On a national average, though, the air travel numbers are a little different.
The numbers also say traveling on the holidays themselves is a breeze.
“So, Christmas Eve Day and Christmas are among some of our lightest days of the year,” said Welbes. “Same with Thanksgiving Day, so if you do have a flight that day, you can plan for a pretty light load here at the airport.”
If you are hitting the road instead of flying, AAA says you’ll be among 102,000,000 Americans to do so. It will be the most holiday auto travel since they began tracking it 15 years ago.
All forms of travel combined will be up between 4 and 5 percent.
