Crystal man pleads guilty to wife's 2017 murder

A Crystal, Minnesota man pleaded guilty Friday to killing his wife in their home in July 2017

Dennis Sandland, 57, pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder. 

According to the charges and his guilty plea, Sandland separately called his adults son and daughter sometime after 6 p.m. on July 12, 2017 to say he shot his wife, Sandra. His son then called police. 

Police responded to the couple's home on the 4800 block of Yates Avenue North. Dennis was outside the home, but he went back inside. 

About two and a half hours later, officers eventually persuaded Dennis to surrender. He was taken into custody.

When police entered the found 53-year-old Sandra lying dead in her bed with a gunshot wound to the head. 

Several times that evening, Dennis said he was angry with his wife so he shot her in the head. Family members told police there had been trouble in the couple's marriage recently and they had been fighting. 

Dennis will be sentenced on Jan. 2. As part of the negotiated settlement, he is expected to receive more than 25 years in prison.
