Four players from the University of Minnesota wrestling team have been suspended from competition for the rest of the year, according to a university spokesperson.

Sophomore Tommy Thorn, sophomore Ethan Lizak, redshirt freshman Larry Early and sophomore Brandon Krone were suspended for violating team rules.

They will not be able to compete until January. The wrestling season starts in November, but the majority of the season takes place in 2017.

According to the search warrant, the University of Minnesota Police Department investigated the four wrestlers for dealing the prescription drug Xanax.

Hennepin County Attorney's Office declined to prosecute the case, citing insufficient evidence.

University officials would not confirm if these suspensions are related to the drug investigation.

In September, the university fired head wrestling coach J Robinson.
