Experts: Bad mosquito season about to get worse
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - After the rain, come the mosquitos. Officials with the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District say this year will likely be a pretty significant season when all is said and done.
Crews were out spraying Friday in the area and they'll be dropping pellets aimed at controlling the mosquito population beginning on Saturday as they work trying to head off the next wave of mosquitos.
“When you get a lot of rainfall, those low spots fill up with water, those mosquitos start to produce,” said Mike McLean, communications coordinator for the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District. “The next wave really hasn’t hatched yet, so we’re out there trying to keep them from getting any worse.”
Families are already feeling the effects of mosquitos and are taking precautions.
“It’s a nuisance, it’s a pain and it’s uncomfortable,” said Angie Sovak, of Eden Prairie. “It’s really nice that we have this park here in the area, and it’s just too bad we feel like we can’t use it because the bugs are biting us.”
Experts recommend using mosquito repellant, avoiding the outdoors during dusk and early morning, getting rid of standing water around your home, and wearing loose-fitted, light-colored clothing as ways to reduce the presence.
