Clinton talks Castile and education at AFT convention

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton spoke at the American Federal Teachers' biennial convention in Minneapolis Monday night in the wake of a controversial shooting that has shaken Minnesota and the country.

At one point in the speech, protesters marched to the stage chanting, "Hands up, don't shoot" when Clinton started talking about Philando Castile. 

Clinton told the crowd she shares the "urgency and the commitment to actually address these issues." She also said she met with Castile's family before taking the stage.

Later in the speech, she addressed educational issues to the crowd.

“Neither Donald Trump nor Mike Pence should be anywhere near our children’s education,” said Clinton.

Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Keith Downey issued the following statement regarding the National Convention and Hillary Clinton's visit to Minnesota.

"It is the first day of the Republican National Convention and today's theme - Make America Safe Again - could not be more fitting in light of recent events. Hillary Clinton talks a big talk, but when it comes down to results we have a more dangerous world, a weakened national security, and have lost the respect of other nations because of our failure to lead. We need new leadership, not a third term of Obama's failed policies. It's time to make America safe again."
