24-year-old soldier killed in motorcycle hit-and-run in Elko New Market

A 24-year-old United States Army National Guard soldier from Elko New Market was killed in a hit-and-run with a motorcyclist in her hometown early Sunday morning. 

Mollie Mahowald was with friends on the 2700 block of Main Street shortly before 2:30 a.m. when she was struck and killed by a motorcycle. The motorcycle fled the scene.

First responders attempted to revive Mahowald, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mahowald graduated from New Prague High School in 2010, according to a statement from the Elko New Market Chamber of Commerce. She was a wheeled vehicle technician with the U.S. Army National Guard and served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Elko New Market Police Department and the Scott County sheriff’s office investigated the crash and were able to identify the driver of the motorcycle. He was arrested a short time later at his home in Dakota County and is being held in the Scott County Jail pending formal charges.

The Elko Market Police Department, the Scott County sheriff’s office and the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office are still investigating the accident.
