The University of Minnesota linebacker coach went to the hospital on Tuesday for an unexpected surgery, according to the Gophers Associate Athletic Communications Director.

Mike Sherels, 31, also had a medical procedure last week before fall camp started.

Sherels is from Rochester and was a former standout linebacker for the Gophers, playing from 2003 to 2007. He has been an assistant coach for Minnesota since March 2014.

“Mike is Minnesota football,” said head coach Tracy Claeys. “There are few things that are more important to him than this university and this football program. We ask that you respect his privacy and that of his family during this time.”

Gophers officials did not comment on when Sherels will be returning.
