Tickets for Minneapolis showings of 'Hamilton' hit secondary market at high prices

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Rapidly becoming one of Broadway’s biggest hits, “Hamilton” is coming to Minnesota for the first time this summer. But getting your hands on some tickets will cost you a pretty penny. 

“Hamilton” won't start its six-week run until the end of August, but anticipation for the show already has some charging massive prices for tickets.

“’Hamilton’ is the biggest phenomenon on Broadway that we've probably seen, ever. We haven't seen popularity like this, [even] Book of Mormon,” said Dale Stark with Hennepin Theatre Trust.

The Hennepin Theatre Trust said it has already sold about 15,000 tickets in season ticket packages alone. 

Season ticket holders have another couple of weeks to buy additional tickets.

Then, the theatre trust expects to announce when about 100,000 remaining seats for single shows will go on sale in the next three to four weeks.

“When we sell for a season, we have to make sure there are tickets available for individual shows; we have to cap the number of season ticket packages we sell,” Stark said.

On ticket re-sale sites like Stub Hub and Ticket King, “Hamilton” tickets are going anywhere from about $500 to as much as $6,000 each.

But the Hennepin Theatre Trust said if you don't buy your tickets from the box office or Ticketmaster, it’s buyer beware - and no one wants to throw away their shot at seeing the best of Broadway.

"The fact that we have it for six weeks means we really get to know them, they get to come to Minnesota and see what kind of terrific theatre audiences we have," Stark said.

The Hennepin Theatre Trust said it will probably offer a limited number of rush tickets to “Hamilton,” like other cities have done.

“Hamilton" premieres on Aug. 29 at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis.
