St. Paul City Council approves Major League Soccer stadium site plan

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - The St. Paul City Council approved the site plan for the proposed MLS soccer stadium.

In a council meeting Wednesday afternoon, council members voted 5-1 on several measures regarding the development plans. Council member Jane Prince opposed the measures and council member Dan Bostrom was not in attendance.

The council approved zoning changes, the Snelling-Midway redevelopment site plan and the stadium site plan.

The proposed stadium would be located at Snelling Ave and St. Anthony Ave, which is the former site of a bus barn. Also part of the redevelopment site is retail owned by RK Midway. The redevelopment plans call for retail space as well. The entire site plan encompasses about 12 city blocks.

Mayor Chris Coleman released the following statement after the vote:

“Today marks a huge milestone for Saint Paul and the entire region. We are one step closer to seeing incredible redevelopment in the heart of the Twin Cities – made possible by the catalyst of this proposed stadium – and one step closer to bringing Major League Soccer to Minnesota."

“I want to thank all who were engaged in this process, including the many residents and community groups who weighed in and helped to shape the outcome, as well as the Community Advisory Committee, city staff, the Planning Commission and City Council.”
