Dozens line up outside State Theatre for 'Hamilton' tickets

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Dozens of people started lining up outside the State Theatre box office in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday evening to be first to get tickets to the Tony Award-winning musical “Hamilton.” 

A limited number of tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Greg Burke, the first person in line, got there at 10:45 p.m. the night before. 

“It’s a lot less expensive than going to New York to see it,” said Burke. “It’s a lot less expensive than getting it later from a scalper.” 

By 3 a.m., there were 45 people in line. 

Alex Reyes has seen Hamilton before and said it is worth spending the night in line. 

"I didn't understand the hype and I was a little bit annoyed at how expensive the tickets were," Reyes said of her first time seeing the show. "And then I saw it and I get it. It's worth sleeping on Hennepin all night and I want to see it again and get better seats."

The Hennepin Theatre Trust says ticket availability at the box office will be “extremely limited,” because the majority of tickets will be sold online. If you hope to buy tickets online, only fans who registered with “Ticketmaster Verified Fan” and got a confirmation email will be able to buy tickets on Thursday. Prices range from $79 to $199, with premium seats for $479. 

If you do not get tickets, there is still hope. Additional tickets will be sold closer to the engagement and there will also be a ticket lottery before every show. 

Hamilton kicks off a six-week run at the Orpheum Theatre on Aug. 29.
