Larry Fitzgerald fulfills dying mom's promise, receives college degree

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver and Minnesota native Larry Fitzgerald fulfilled the promise he made to his dying mother and became a college graduate this weekend.

Before his mom Carol passed in 2003 from breast cancer, Fitzgerald promised her he'd receive his college degree. For 13 years, he worked towards that goal.

On Saturday, Fitzgerald, 32, graduated from the University of Phoenix with a major in communications and minor in marketing. He previously attended the University of Pittsburgh in 2002 through 2003 before his mother passed away.

"I feel blessed to have had her for 19 years, and she was around long enough to shape me into the man I am today," Fitzgerald told the Arizona Republic. "But I'm sad at the fact that she busted her ass for so many years so I could live my dream, and she never saw the things I could've given her. That hurts."
