UPDATE (9:10 p.m. Thursday): Minneapolis Police say the child who survived the fall has been upgraded to serious condition and their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

A child has died and another remains in critical condition after they fell from a window or balcony of an apartment building in south Minneapolis, according to Minneapolis Police.

Police say around 2:20 p.m., workers in the area reported that they saw two children fall from from an apartment building, called Karmel Village, in the 2800 block of Pleasant Avenue. It is still unclear how far the children fell.

The workers provided aid to the children after seeing them fall until paramedics and officers arrived.

“We saw two kids one was being carried on the shoulder,” said Lamiya Said, a witness. “The other was on the floor. They were performing CPR on the one on the floor the other was being transported to the ambulances.”

Crews rushed the children to Hennepin County Medical Center. One child is still in critical condition. Both children are under four years old. It is unclear if the children are related to one another.

Police say there was an adult present at the time of the incident.

The fall happened near to the Midtown Greenway. Emergency crews have taped off an grassy area near the path. It is unclear on what surface the children fell, however.

Police are working with the city's Strategic Information Center to determine if any nearby cameras captured the incident.

The case is still under investigation. The identity of the deceased child will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

"Our hearts go out to those who are affected by this tragedy," said John Elder, of the Minneapolis Police Department. Elder went on to remind people to keep windows, sliding glass doors and other open areas sealed when small children are around, especially as the weather improves.
