A State Patrol officer and another driver were both injured in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in Lakeville, Minnesota, according to a statement released on Twitter.

Investigators said a Chrysler 200 driven by a 29-year-old Lakeville resident left Interstate 35, crossed a median and went through a fence near the intersection of Kenrick Avenue and 205th Street just after 4 p.m. before striking the trooper's vehicle. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

"This could have very easily been a fatal crash," said State Patrol spokesperson Lt. Tiffani Nielsen. "We're just happy that it wasn't."

The driver of the Chrysler was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital after suffering serious injuries, officials said.

The trooper, later identified as 35-year-old Sgt. Mike Krukowski, was pinned in his vehicle but ultimately was extricated and transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
