Speed limit increasing to 60 mph on 7 Minnesota highways

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation is increasing the speed limit from 55 mph to 60 mph on several highways in the northwest. The new speed limits take effect when the new signs are posted. 

New 60 mph speed limits in northern Minnesota

Highway 34 from Detroit Lakes to Park Rapids
Highway 64 from Highway 200 to Highway 87
Highway 172 from Baudette to Wheeler’s Point
Highway 310 from Roseau to Canadian Border

New 60 mph speed limits in western Minnesota

Highway 9 from Highway 10 to Sunburg
Highway 28 from Browns Valley to Sauk Centre
Highway 34 from Barnesville to Dunvilla

Speed limits lower than 55 mph along these sections of highway will remain unchanged.

The speed limit increases are the results of a traffic and engineering study that examined past crash rates, attributes of the highway like shoulder widths and access points and an analysis of current driving speeds. The MnDOT speed limit study, with was directed by the Minnesota Legislature in 2014 will end in 2019.
