Fatal officer-involved shooting in Crystal, Minn.

A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Crystal, Minnesota, according to the Hennepin County sheriff's office.

Around 5:06 p.m., dispatch received a report of a suicidal person on the 5100 block of Angeline Avenue North.

When officers arrived, they found a man armed with a gun. They began evacuating neighboring homes.

Once they made contact with the man, shots were fired by both the man and the officers. The man died at the scene. Police have identified the shooting officer as Officer Ben Harty. Harty has served as a peace officer for close to nine years, and joined the New Hope Police Department in December 2008. He is currently on paid administrative leave, per the department’s policy.

No officers were injured during the shooting. Police from Crystal, New Hope, and Robbinsdale responded to the incident.

At the request of Crystal police, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office will taking on the investigation.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will identify the man and complete the autopsy.
