DOC: 5 staff members injured in 2 incidents at Oak Park Heights prison

The Minnesota Correctional Facility in Oak Park Heights is on lockdown after five staff members were taken to the hospital following two separate incidents Friday. 

The first incident occurred at 9:40 a.m. According to Minnesota Department of Corrections spokesperson Sarah Fitzgerald, staff responded to a report of two offenders fighting. One of the offenders resisted staff, injuring two staff members. 

The second incident occurred at 10:15 a.m. Fitzgerald said an offender was resisting staff. Three staff members were injured will trying to contain the situation. 

All five injured staff members were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. 

The prison is currently on lockdown. 

Fitzgerald said the incidents are under investigation and the "offenders responsible will be held accountable." 

These are the third and fourth reported inmate assaults on staff members at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights this year. 

Last week, Corrections Officer Joseph Parise died from a medical emergency after he responded to help another officer who was assaulted by an inmate. In June, a corrections officer was attacked by an inmate, but fought back with the help of other officers.
