Body found in Mississippi River in St. Cloud after search for swimmer

- Divers recovered a body from the Mississippi River in St. Cloud a day after a man disappeared while swimming in the river, according to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

Monday, people reported to police seeing a man start to swim in the Mississippi River near the 700 block of 5th Avenue North. They lost sight of him when he reached the halfway point of the river. They described him as an adult man wearing jeans and a white t-shirt.

Authorities began searching the area by boat and drone. That evening, officials found jeans, shoes and a backpack near the area where the man went into the river. In the pants pocket, they found a Minnesota ID belonging to a person similar to the description the witnesses gave.

Officials resumed their search on Tuesday. After using sonar, at 8:25 p.m. divers recovered a man's body from the river. He matched the earlier descriptions.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will complete an autopsy. He has been identified as 49-year-old Shannon David Shaw of Waite Park, Minn.
