Bicyclist in critical condition after St. Paul hit-and-run

A bicyclist is fighting for his life after being hit by a car early Sunday morning.

A driver struck the bicyclist around 12:15 a.m. at 7th Street West and Grand Avenue and then fled the scene, St. Paul police said.

The victim was unconscious, unresponsive and suffering from serious injuries, police reported. He was transported to Regions Hospital.

Investigators have not formally identified the victim, but Brasa Rotisserie says he is one of their employees.

The restaurant says the worker, Jose H., had completed a shift at their St. Paul location and was leaving on his bike when he was struck. The restaurant says Jose was wearing a helmet with its headlamp lit.

According to witnesses, the victim was riding his bike, which had a light on it, through the intersection and had the right of way. The driver ran a red light, struck the victim and fled the scene without stopping the vehicle, a press release stated.

Investigators said the vehicle “may have been a beige or tan colored SUV” and likely has front-end damage.
