Flooding washes out roads in Minnesota, northern Wisconsin

(KMSP) - This weekend brought a flurry of severe weather to much of Minnesota and Wisconsin, adding up 7 to 12 inches of rain in some areas.

Flash Flood Warnings were scattered throughout both states, with several areas reporting road closures or road washouts by Sunday morning. Highway 23 in Carlton County is closed from County Road 1 to County Road 8 near the Nemadji River due to a washed out road.

In Wisconsin, a state of emergency has been declared with several counties impacted by flooding. The counties with the most damage include Douglas, Ashland, Bayfield, Price, Iron and Sawyer Counties. 

Road closures in Wisconsin include sections of U.S. Highways 2, 35, 53, 63 and 137. Law enforcement agencies were advising no travel on Sunday, reminding motorist that driving through water is dangerous and is putting first responders at risk.

Both Douglas and Bayfield counties are encouraging residents and businesses impacted by flooding to call 2-1-1 to report flood damage. Sawyer County and Lac Courte Oreilles Nation have reported several homes damaged by fallen trees as a result of the storms. Several rivers including the Nemadji and Brule Rivers are running high and are flooding.

Evacuations were made at Copper Falls State Park on Saturday night. The decision was made to close access to Amnicon Falls State Park on Sunday afternoon due to concerns regarding park guests on the walking bridges and roads.
