3 people dead, sheriff's deputy injured in Hubbard County

Three people are dead and a Hubbard County sheriff’s deputy was shot in an incident in Nevis, Minnesota Thursday night.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a 911 caller reported a shooting at a home on the 100 block of Paul Bunyan Trail in Nevis, a town about halfway between Park Rapids and Walker. When deputies arrived, they found a woman dead outside the home. 

The armed suspect had fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle prior to the deputies’ arrival. A second woman, who had also been shot, was still inside the vehicle when the suspect fled. 

Deputies located the vehicle north of Nevis and a chase ensued. The pursuit lasted approximately 20 minutes, during which the suspect fired at the deputies’ squad cars, hitting one of the deputies. 

The suspect drove the victim’s vehicle into a ditch on County Road 119. 

A deputy located the vehicle and the suspect. They exchanged gunfire, then the suspect got back into the vehicle he was driving. 

Deputies later determined the suspect had died.

The sheriff said the two women who died were related, but would not say how. The suspect knew the victims, but the sheriff did not disclose their exact relationship. 

The deputy who was shot was treated at a nearby hospital and released. The deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on standard administrative leave. . 

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
