Snow arrives in Twin Cities, 6-10 inches possible by end of Wednesday

A snow storm arrived in the Twin Cities metro Wednesay and it could dump up to 10 inches of snow by day's end. 

The heaviest snow will fall before lunchtime with the bulk of the metro's anticipated 6-8 inches in places by early afternoon. Snow will slowly taper off Wednesay afternoon into the evening with up to 10 inches possible for some in the Winter Storm Warning area. 

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. for most of the metro and until 9 p.m. for the north metro and central Minnesota. 

Statewide, the Minnesota State Patrol responded to 282 crashes, 35 with injuries, 584 spin outs and 7 jackknifed semis from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

SNOW TIMELINE

  • Rest of Wednesday morning: Heavy snow bursts at times. Accumulations continue to build. 
  • Noon-3 p.m.: Snow tapers to light to moderate pulses with occasional lulls. 
  • Wednesday evening commute: Only a few light flakes and flurries left to taper off. 

RUNWAYS CLOSED AT MSP AIRPORT 

The runways are closed at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport until at least 9:30 a.m. for plowing.

The airport remains open, but departures are delayed by an average of 30 minutes and arrivals by an average of 51 minutes. Delays for arrivals and departures are expected to rise. 

SNOW EMERGENCIES 

Minneapolis and St. Paul have now declared snow emergencies, with plowing set to begin at 9 p.m. Wednesday in both cities. 

A number of other cities in the area have also declared snow emergencies, including Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Crystal, St. Louis Park, Bloomington, Faribault and Red Wing. 

SCHOOL CLOSINGS 

About 400 schools are closed or delayed across the state. Most the metro's largest districts are closed, including Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools.
