VIDEO: Escaping the Valley Fire in California

Thousands of people fled their homes on September 13 as the Valley Fire consumed more than 40,000 acres overnight in northern California. This video posted on Instagram by David Demartini, shows evacuees driving past burning buildings in Middletown, Calif.

The Valley Fire has destroyed about 400 buildings, according to fire officials. At least one person was killed and 4 firefighters suffered second-degree burns in the fire.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency, mobilizing the National Guard to assist with fighting the fire in Napa and Lake counties.
