KMSP, Minneapolis - It may sound like you have heard this before, but in reality it’s a relatively new record. The former holder of the warmest year since records began was 2014, now its 2015. In fact, 2015 broke the record by the largest margin yet, some 1/3 of a degree warmer than the 20 year average.
The continent of North America, including the United States, saw the largest jump in average temperatures in 2015 with average temperature at 2.59 degrees above the 20 year average.
The graph below shows the steady rise in average temperatures since records began in 1880.
This trend in warming temperatures has been steady with 15 of the 16 warmest years on record occurring since 2001.
