Hot, hot Friday, very nice Mother's Day weekend

- After a very typical start to the spring season with April about as normal as it gets, we turn up the heat… well for one day at least.  It’s been a beautiful couple of days with temperatures rising from the 60s of Wednesday to the almost 80 degree readings of Thursday.  Well Friday we kick it up another notch as we are likely to see the warmest day of the year so far, and the warmest day since the State Fair of last year.

So why so warm??  Well, if you read this blog a lot, or remember your schooling, the atmosphere acts like a fluid.  Well, a cold front will be sweeping across the Midwest today, but out ahead of it, conditions allow temperatures to warm rapidly.  Not only that, but since the atmosphere acts like a fluid, warm air can pool up against the front, a lot like water pooling up against your windshield wipers as it’s raining.  So temperatures just ahead of the front can soar much higher than they would have otherwise.  This could spell the first shot at 90’s for a good chunk of the state, INCLUDING the metro.  Here is where temperatures have the best chance of climbing into the 90s today…

Areas from the metro westward have the best shot with low 90s likely for many and even a mid-90 or two, not out of the question.  Here’s one of the high resolution models that may be confirming our current thinking…

This puts low 90s in all of central Minnesota.  Now if you’re not a heat person (clearly I’m not) then take solace in the fact that it will only last one day… we are right back to seasonable 60s and 70s over the weekend…
