A speeding driver got away from a Wright County deputy during a short chase on Highway 25 in Buffalo, Minn. early Thursday morning, but was captured after attacking and stealing the truck of a man who stopped to help.
According to the sheriff, 27-year-old Jeremy Sterzinger of St. Joseph, Minn. used the right shoulder to speed around a deputy's squad car at about 2 a.m. Thursday. The deputy activated his lights and siren and pursued the speeding Chevy Impala, but lost track of the car on Highway 25 near 8th Street NE.
A few minutes later, a Silver Lake, Minn. man called 911 to report his pickup had just been stolen when he stopped to help a driver who had crashed into a ditch. The victim, Brent Morris, said he was assaulted by the driver who had crashed a white Impala into the ditch near Highway 55 and County Road 35.
Morris told Fox 9 that he spotted him on his way to work and stopped to help.
"You could tell he was going to try and punch me," Morris said. "I swung my head down like this and he whacked me in the back of the head, and my phone and my glasses fell down."
Deputies found the stolen pickup near Highway 55 and 1st St NE in Buffalo, and a short chase ended when the speeding pickup struck a power pole at Calder Ave NE. Sterzinger fled on foot, but a K9 team was able to track him down and make an arrest.
