SUV hits deer on Hwy. 36 in Maplewood, passenger killed

A woman was killed Sunday evening after an SUV struck a deer on Highway 36 in Maplewood and spun out of control. 

At 5:20 p.m., a RAV4 was traveling westbound on Hwy. 36 when it hit a deer in the left lane near the Edgerton Street exit. The driver lost control and ended up in the ditch on the north side of the road. 

The passenger, identified as 56-year-old Jody Rae Bergsgaard of Oakdale, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 61-year-old Oakdale man, was transported to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

The crash remains under investigation.
